Orazio “Horace” Lucido was born to Giuseppe Lucido and Francesca Cardinale on October 9, 1909 in the town of Isola delle Femmine, Sicily.
Horace was a commercial fisherman and lived on the Monterey Peninsula for over 20 years, he skippered the Mary Ann a purse seiner in which he owned shares. Horace died an untimely death on November 1, 1957, at the age of 48 while fishing off the coast of Ventura, California, when he suffered a heart attack while at sea 12 miles off Port Hueneme. The heart attack occurred about 6:30 in the morning while fishing and he died at 8:10 in the morning at Port Hueneme as reported in the Monterey Peninsula Herald.
Horace married his first wife Maria Carannante on December 26, 1936, in Tefeschoun, Tipaza, Algeria (Chiffalo). Maria was born on January 17, 1918, in Algeria. They had one son Giuseppe Gaetano Lucido born on March 11, 1938 in Algeria. Giuseppe died September 9, 1977 in Aubagne, France he was married to Irene Liopis on February 7, 1959 in Birmadndreis, Algeria. Irene Liopis was born on June 17, 1935 in Alicante, Pais Valenciano, Spain.
Horace operated the fishing boat Mary Ann out of Monterey, and made his home at 666 Schafer Street in Seaside, Ca. He is survived by his partner Joanne “Lewis” date of birth about 1926 and died December 23, 2015, they had five children Thomas Joseph born July 18, 1947, Monterey Ca, Jeannie Francene born on April 30, 1950, Monterey, CA, Deborah Denise born October 14,1952 Monterey, CA, Horace Jefferson born May 6, 1954 Monterey, Ca and David M. born September 20, 1956 Monterey, Ca.
Horace also leaves his mother Mrs. Francesca Lucido, three brothers Frank, Salvatore and Joseph Lucido; and three sisters, Mrs. Angela Buffa, Mrs. Marie Pescatore and Mamie.
The Mary Ann was sold to a man whose last name was Wilson and was used to fish for crab off the coast Oregon. The Mary Ann floundered off the coast of Oregon at Winchester Bay in the late 60’s and was lost.
Horace was buried at the Monterey Catholic Cemetery.
