David Marzetti HONOREE 2014

Updated: Mar 9, 2021

Hailing from Canton, Ohio, David has been in the radio business since 1976. He graduated from the WXY School of Broadcasting in Cleveland and immediately went to work on the air starting in Canton, then Akron, then Cleveland using the "air name" David Mars. He ran stations in Charleston, South Carolina, Boston and Massachusetts before moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1990. Upon landing in Monterey, he wanted to experience life on the Peninsula as a regular citizen and not go right back into radio as a personality. Hearing that the Italians were working at Rappa's he applied and landed a job as a waiter. He became friends with Angelo Di Girolamo and performed in lead roles at the Wharf Theatre. He then branched out and sang for the Monterey Peninsula Choral Society, the Monterey Symphony Chorus and the Monterey Opera. While on the Del Monte Golf Course he met Mike Marotta Jr. who would become one of his closest friends and was even best man at his wedding. Mike and David played hundreds of gigs and thousands of holes of golf since their meeting, along with countless dinners, dances, festivals, fundraisers, and events, almost all for free.

In 1992 David decided it was time to go back into the radio world and was hired as Program Director and Morning DJ at KOCN 105 fm. There he would stay until 2002. Celebrating his Italian heritage, he then helped develop the Paisano Radio format on 1460 am. Although short-lived, many still remember it as the station that featured all the Italian favorites. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Vale, Connie Francis and Louie Prima were played daily. In the year 2002 with the help of Mark Carbonaro he put the SHAGBAG Radio Show on the air on 1460 am and 101.1 FM KION. With his good friend Sam Salerno, the show is broadcast LIVE from the Del Monte Golf Course Grill every Saturday morning at 9:00 am. It's now in it's 11th year.

Showing his love for his community, David has championed many events, emceed l00's of golf tournaments, promoted countless numbers of fundraisers, and assisted in helping every non-profit charity event that came his way by sitting on their board, joining their committees, volunteering at their events and giving them time for promotion on the radio. He has also been the official Emcee and featured performer at the Festa Italia Santa Rosalia Festival for the past 17 years.

In 2008 David was selected by the PGA of America to receive their prestigious MEDIA PERSON OF THE YEAR award. Due to all his good works he has been honored with special proclamations from Mayors Dan Albert and Chuck Della Sala of Monterey, Congressman Sam Farr and Senators Anthony Cannella, Sam Blakeslee, and Bill Monning. David is a LIFELONG member of California Highway Patrol's 11-99 Foundation which aids the widows and children of fallen CHP officers, The Monterey Compari Club, and the Monterey Paisano Club.

Proudly promoting the place he loves to live, the Monterey Peninsula, David works fulltime as the Membership Manager at the Monterey Peninsula County Convention & Visitors Bureau. On Sundays he enjoys working for the US NA VY at the Monterey Pines Golf Club. David lives on Via Gayuba in Monterey with his lovely wife Terri and their dog Puffy.
